The King Is Back!

Please, please, let this movie be as good as the trailer suggests:

And can anyone tell me why the paratroops get dropped with those red smoke bombs at their ankles? Is this some real-world thing, and if so, then doesn't that just make it easier to see them coming in?

From the halls of the Crystal Empire to the shores of Canterlot...

Of all the things I've seen lately...

Toys for Tots is back again, it being that time of year, and the local mall has a USMC table where they're collecting the toys. It is staffed by a Marine in dress uniform and the toys are in a box beside it and sometimes set atop it so the Marines can play with examine them.

The mall also has a 'Build-a-Bear' store which sells, among other stuffed animals, several of the mane characters from My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic. In case you've never seen one of these stores, you basically buy a bear or pony or whatever for about $25, stuff it, and then buy little accessories for it (dresses, jewelry, shows, etc.) so you can customize it however you want. But they all cost money. Some 'finished' MLP and teddy bears are on display and they go for about $50-60 each. So not cheap.

Anyway I was walking by and among the toys on the table was a very fancy Build-a-Bear Fluttershy and the Marine was fooling around with it (not like that!). I was either staring in shock or watching with amusement. Finally I had to comment.

"You know," I told him, "some little kid's going to love that."

His response?

"Gee, you're right. I better get one for the box, too."

Final Story on my Sister thus far

...She kept her job. I am very grateful to be reporting that. But now she's annoyed that she will probably have to work Thanksgiving (she usually doesn't).

To any of you who sent any prayers, good wishes, etc., our way, thank you.

More news on my sister

She called work and was told to come in tomorrow at her regular time. I'm hoping she'll keep her job even if it involves a pay cut or the like. Maybe they'll think her losing three days of work is enough. I pray that's the case and not one of being 'told to come in to be told to get out'.

If nothing else at least the wait will be over for both of us and she'll have an answer.

If you have any prayers or positive thoughts to spare, please send them her way.

No lie, and here it is: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?167625

And they have a (very brief) listing for my old story 'Warriors of Varkashar' right here: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1369555

Some of you may remember that one, I posted a somewhat cleaned up and re-edited version of it here years ago.

Whoever is responsible for this, THANK YOU.

So, I finally saw 'Equestria Girls'
Ponys!
eric_hinkle
I finally watched Equestria Girls...

And I was seriously underwhelmed. It was neither as horrid as some fans would have you think, but at the same time... it's just kind of there. IMHO the film lacks a lot of the charm and sly humor that appeals to adults as much as kids that is the foundation of My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic's appeal. I did notice all the cameos by various human avatars of the ponies found in Equestria, but that really felt more tacked on. Like they said 'See, here they are, you got your shout-out fanboys, now stop grumbling about a little girl's cartoon'. Worst of all, little if any of it had anything at all to do with the plot. And in a 72-minute movie you don't have a lot of time for stuff like that.

And Snips and Snails were Sunset Shimmer's flunkies? Seriously? A 'human-ized' Gilda Griffin would have been much better. Gilda was genuinely nasty in Equestria, and she just would have worked better than poor Snips and Snails (who even for a little kids' cartoon manage to be about as intimidating as Beavis and Butt-head). I suppose this was a shut-out to their foolish fanboyism of Trixie in the two episodes she showed up in, but even then they were just somewhat sycophantic nincompoops, not bullying thugs.

I did like the opening with Twilight wondering if she had what it took to be a princess. However, it left me wondering what if the movie decided to go with Twi being offered rulership of a Principate (I think that's what you call a government lead by a Princess) by Celestia, and she has to deal with everything going wrong before the inevitable upbeat ending. Sunset Shimmer could have tried to usurp the throne to prove herself more worthy than Twilight, and Twi's friends could have gone along full of ideas about 'how much fun' or how easy it would be to be a princess, only to be disabused when the realities of leadership raise their ugly head. Okay, not so much of a story, but it feels like it would've worked better than a story using the magical ponies in flipping high school of all things.

So in the end, I didn't love the movie but I didn't hate it either. It just feels like it could have been so much more. Then again, if this does well we might get more MLP movies. Hopefully ones set in Equestria. And seriously, I doubt anyone not old enough to remember the 80's MLP would have believed a new MLP movie was even possible before this.

I have only one thing to say for today...

eric_hinkle
Here's a treat for you all. I've had more than my share of tricks today. (Seriously, if you can send any good thoughts or hopes my way, I'd appreciate them).

And for Halloween, a movie that has appeared on both MST3K and in the Criterion Collection. I give you... Fiend Without A Face!

And lost treasures do still exist! 106 lost Doctor Who episodes found.
Happy woof!

A bit of news here for Doctor Who fans -- 106 lost Doctor Who episodes featuring the first two Doctors have been discovered in Ethiopia. For real. Who'd have thought it?

Maybe if they look a little more they'll find a complete copy of London After Midnight, too.
